Review:
This versatile arrangement of Thomas A. Dorsey’s beloved hymn includes optional parts for B-flat clarinet, bass, and drum set. The introduction is very slow and free with the melody being played by handchimes and accompanied by singing bells. What follows is a relaxed, gospel treatment of the hymn, using a malleted bass line. The bass handchimes take the hymn in the next verse, accompanied by thumb-damped upper treble bells. A grand final verse uses plenty of LV in the bass, full chords and an improvisatory clarinet solo. A brief return to the singing bells and melody in the handchimes brings this soulful arrangement to its final rest. Begins in Eb Major, then modulates to F Major. 81 measures.
