Review:
Just when we thought another setting of this favorite Ukrainian carol wasn’t possible … Patrick Meyer has put that thought to rest! The opening of rapid eighth-note parallel octave ascending runs culminating in a B-flat major BD chord ending in Shakes leading directly into the familiar main theme sets the stage for what’s to come! The 'swinging' next section is an amazing improv of the tune with multiple key changes segueing into a 'Take 5’ rhythm. Words cannot adequately describe the jazz improv that reemerges – with a 'straight rhythm' main theme – back again to swinging jazz to the end. This will be a rhythmic challenge for even the most accomplished groups – but well worth the effort! Percussion parts are written into the handbell score.
