Try out Square One’s pedagogical method for teaching ringing and note reading with a single sample lesson (one of the sixteen sequential lessons - lettered “A” through “P”). This particular lesson “Section F” focuses on using quarter and half rests. “Painted Desert” is a lovely, dignified solo piece for L1 groups and is also compatible with a soon-to-be-released 3-5 oct. version – making it ideal for multiple grade/class/level presentations/concerts and for multi-level festival repertoire options. Great for workshops, classes or pedagogical studies – and to get a feel for the methodology used in Square One (RE3013R). A restricted permission for reproduction is included: to make enough copies for ringers’ use and projection needs if sufficient copies have been purchased for performance. Also included is the “Finder Index” page from Square One, which shows a listing of all 16 lessons and topics covered in the full course.
• A unison exercise skillfully introduces counting and playing quarter and half notes and rests in 4/4 time, the concept of optional notes in parentheses ( ), repeat sign navigation, Shake (SK) and Ring (R) designations, forte and piano, crescendo, diminuendo and ritardando. This exercise uses a single-line staff with space note in left hand and line note in right hand – for everyone.
• A simple chordal exercise leads ringers through many rhythmic variations of notes and rests using half and quarter values (with a repeat) - all ringers experience all these skills.
• Two etudes - “Bingo” (encourages singing along) and “Painted Desert” (compelling and dignified) – reinforce skills and theory recently learned.
• An assessment page covers new skills, guiding ringers through exercises to test their retention and understanding of the lesson.
