Jesous Ahatonhia
The melody of the popular French folk song “Une Jeune Pucelle” became important historically when a Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brebeuf, wrote lyrics using imagery based on Huron religious concepts to explain the birth of Christ to the Huron Indians. This arrangement uses the original Huron title “Jesous Ahatonhia” which translates as ‘Jesus, he is born’. A wonderful choice for beginning choirs, the 1st stanza is chordal, while the 2nd stanza has an arpeggiated bass line.
