Island Enchantress
The Island Enchantress was first performed in 1991 in Canada, where it was commissioned by the Ontario Guild of Handbell Ringers. It is a full orchestral work that tells the story of Deardra, a jealous sorceress who turned Homer's Scylla into a monster of the deep who snatches sailors to their doom from passing ships. It is scored for three levels of handbells, 2, 3 & 4 (one or all) combined with a full orchestra, SATB chorus and narrator. Unique and truly challenging for that handbell choir that has the resources to do something large and unusual.
