Who Is This - A
This little-known Southern Harmony gem enthralls with a unique form, minor mode and intriguing melody. These L3 arrangements explore three variations (verses) utilizing martellato statements and interesting harmonies. In addition, two insightful new hymn texts for Epiphany and Palm Sunday expand liturgical-use possibilities. The traditional Lenten text associated with this tune begins with "Who is this that comes from far?", but "Go to Dark Gethsemane" and many other 7.7.7.7.D texts also fit well. Feel free to rename the piece to suit the text you are using.
Two non-compatible Level 3 scores allow for different bell and vocal ranges: RE8729A is for 2 octaves of bells, with optional additional bass down to F3 and a vocal range from G to G, while
RE8729B
spans 3 to 7 octaves with a vocal range from Bb to Bb. Scores are diatonic with no shared bells or bell changes, so they are perfect for socially distanced ringing and even ringing without tables. Each score includes a reproducible bulletin insert with the tune and texts for both new hymns.
Commissioned by Bethan Neely in support of Handbell Musicians of America and for the Quakertown UMC "Grace Notes", this strong, timeless tune is appropriate for worship any time of the year with its many text partners - or as a stand-alone handbell piece for worship, concert and festival. I offer my heartfelt thanks to Pastor Ann Pettit for helping me accurately craft the theological message of each text.
The sound clip features RE8729B for 3-7 octaves. Score 'A' is set in A minor, and Score 'B' is set in C minor. 73 measures, 3:15 performance time.
